How do I ask for or file for financial hardship?

I am currently out of work since May of this year. And living on unemployment, just enough to pay my living expenses. I have around 9,000 in credit card debt. I also am in a program to try cut my debt in half with debt collectors calling daily. I want to file for financial hardship because I can't pay my debts due to me being out of work. Thank you.

  1. I think you mean bankruptcy. You need a lawyer to do it right. It's not DIY.
  2. Hey Sidious: There are lots of programs out there for debt restructure and relief. You don't have to declare bankruptcy to begin a program, but it will depend on how much you owe, your spending habits, etc. Always, before you sign up for a program, read ALL the literature carefully, and get as much information about how they do business as you can. Your credit future will be in their hands, so be careful. Some of the programs you can check into online are: http://www.creditadvisors.com/index.asp?ref=004&kw=3691 http://freefromdebthelp.com/Debt-Relief/debt-relief.html Also, check into debt relief programs in your area. Most City government offices have flyers for these, in addition to your bank. Don't be afraid to ask your bank if they can refer you to a program. Restructure is not easy and requires alot of discipline on your part. You're on the right track! Good Luck.
